Dyeing grey hair with henna? You can do so with optimal grey coverage and in any colour you like, but there are a few handy facts!
Here are the best tips and products for a long-lasting and perfect grey coverage colour result.
Natural dye powders create a brilliant permanent layer of colour around your hair, which gets more and more beautiful and better quality each time you dye your hair. Because this colour layer is really placed around the hair, it is very important that the colour pigments can 'grip' and fixate well on the hair.
For instance, if your hair is too slippery due to silicones, oil, grease, conditioner and the like, the colour pigments cannot 'take hold' and slide right off the hair during rinsing.
But even if the 'grabbing' has gone well, make sure the colour layer is given 3 to 4 days to set (i.e. become permanent/unwashed) and definitely do not wash your hair during that time after dyeing.
So if you want to dye your grey hair with henna, there are some do's and don'ts you should strictly adhere to.

Grey hair that is very difficult to 'cover'
On very healthy grey hair, the henna hair dye may not pick up well, as these hairs can sometimes be so enormously 'slippery'. Especially very healthy, thick hair often has more white hairs that hardly hold the colour pigments. In reality, everyone has a few such hairs, but some have a bit more of them than others.
It is especially important to mix the hair dye with as hot water as possible. Keeping the mixture well warm while soaking is also essential.
You can also choose to mix your hair dye with 50% hot water and 50% lemon juice (unsweetened, from one of those bottles). This enhances the penetration and shortens the soaking time.
Furthermore, the colour layer around these extremely smooth thick grey hairs is very thin and fragile at first. Therefore, wash your hair after dyeing only after 3 days and use an extremely mild natural shampoo without sulphates (and definitely not a shampoo for oily hair or volumising shampoo!).
It can also help to dye your hair again shortly after each other, as the very transparent layer around the white hair will become stronger and less transparent sooner.
Especially for the outgrowth, this is a good idea, as it is better to colour your hair more often for the most powerful lasting result.
Because once the built-up colour layer around these troublesome thick white hairs darkens and hardens over the months, the colour layer is permanent.
Dyeing grey hair with henna hair dye
1. Do not use a hair cure, hair mask or hair oil in the week before dyeing.
2. If necessary, carefully remove all silicones beforehand
If you have a lot of silicone on your hair: mix some rhassoul clay (or lava earth) with water into a paste and massage it into the hair and scalp. Leave this on for about 15 minutes, rinse carefully with plenty of lukewarm water.
Do not use conditioner.
3. Wash buildup, oil and grease from the hair the hair with a natural, silicone-free shampoo
Use an appropriate shampoo, such as Odylique Mild Herbal Shampoo.
Rinse the hair well and do not use conditioner.
Dry the hair with a towel.
Only after this can you apply the colouring to both towel-dried clean hair and dry clean hair.
4. In 1x grey coverage
All henna hair dyes from It's Pure Organics can be used on grey hair without pre-colouring, even the very dark colours!
The first time white hair is dyed with the colour Very Dark Brown or Dark Brown, the hair may in some cases appear to have a greenish haze about it for a while. Don't worry about this at all! This will gradually disappear within a few hours or days, once the dye oxidises and the colour darkens. You can compare this oxidation of the colour to when you cut an apple in half; after some time, the apple turns brown due to oxidation. Similarly, your hair colour also turns brown by oxidation within a few hours to 2 days. We call this that the 'heat' has yet to get into the colour!
From other brands, some lighter colours can also possibly be used on grey hair, see the product descriptions and colour charts.
In all other cases, pre-colouring grey hair is necessary:
Pre-colouring with Pure Henna Red: Keep to the recommended soaking time, once pre-colouring is sufficient. This pre-colouring is effective, but often gives a red undertone to the end result.
5. Dye grey hair in the desired colour
Choose or mix your favourite cream colour or dye powder.
Natural hair dye does not lighten hair.
Avoid excessive colour differences, do not dye white or blonde hair black, for example.
Because the real hair colour will always show through slightly. the colour result on grey or bleached hair will always be lighter than on dark hair.
Stick to the recommended soaking times.
The very first time you dye white or grey hair, the colour result will naturally always be a little light (because the light hairs shine through the still 'thin' new colour layer).
In that case, you can considerably darken, enrich and deepen the colour by giving the hair the same colour treatment again after the first colouring.
Avoid red shades by using It's Pure hair colourings on grey hair and keep to the maximum soaking time!
Tip for colouring outgrowth: Is the colouring slightly less opaque on healthy, still very smooth hair close to the roots? If so, mix a teaspoon of salt through the henna hair colouring mixture, this will 'roughen' the too-smooth hair a little, allowing the colouring pigments to adhere better to the hair.
6. Finally, rinse carefully with lukewarm water.
Never use a shampoo after colouring, let the colouring set and oxidise for 3 to 4 days.
If you are going to do another colouring immediately, do not use a conditioner. Rinse the hair carefully and make it towel-dry. Then immediately apply the next colouring in the hair.
When you have finished colouring, after rinsing your hair, give it a natural conditioner or hair mask without silicones and without chemicals, which also protects the hair colour. Leave this on for 15 minutes and then rinse very well with lukewarm water. Do not use shampoo! (After a cream colouring, there is no need to use a conditioner).
Let your hair air dry or blow dry with lukewarm air. Avoid heat and styling appliances.
